Lee’s Random Advice Page

This page is a collection of what I believe to be true based upon my experiences, the experiences of people around me and what I have read or heard.  It is my little soap box to stand on and pass on what I have learned.  If you disagree or have comments you are welcome to e-mail me, I am always happy to learn from someone who knows more than I do about something.  None of the content of this page is copy written material that I know.

Career fields to consider

Health Care:  There is a shortage of qualified health care workers which is projected to continue for a long time to come.  With 2 years of training one can become a registered nurse.  There earn $30/hr with lots of opportunities for overtime so that a hard working nurse can earn as much as $100,000 / year.  Doctors of course earn more but they need 7 years of training on top of a college degree before they start to earn real money.  Lots of other jobs exists in the field.

Finance:  More and more people will need help with their money as prosperity continues to increase for world.  Accounting, banking, insurance, etc.. are all relatively well paying and in demand.  Especially accounting with the continuing adding of regulations many firms are hungry for accountants and pay very well especially after a few years of experience.

Travel:  Tourism has been steadily growing (expect for the world wide pause after 911) and is projected to become an ever increasingly large part of the world economy.  There are a huge number of support jobs for the tourisms industry.  Hotels, cruise liners, air carriers, bus companies, tour companies and so on.  Being a pilot is the coolest job in this field and other than the dinosaur carriers like United, most carriers are hiring.  I would be happy to help if you are interested.

Computers and Technology:  Even though the dot.com economy had a collapse 4 years ago there is and always will be a huge demand for people with computer and technical skills.  You work hard here but the money is good.

Law:  Unfortunately lawyers are a necessary evil in our society, however they are paid very well and nearly everyone will need to consult with one at least once in their life.  Law school is tough and completive and it is hard to get established, but once you are, money will grow on trees for you.

Education:  Teachers don’t earn near as much as they should and often they don’t get the respect they deserve, but nonetheless it is a good job and has great benefits. There is a huge demand teachers them almost everywhere.  They also on average over 2 months of vacation a year!  Being a teacher is a very rewarding career.  All the teachers I know are very happy with their lives.

** What job you really would like to do or where you want to live should be a big consideration in choosing what career to pursue.  If you have to choose from job A with pay $80k/yr but is not a job you enjoy and forces you to live in a city you hate, and job B which pay $50k/yr that would very much enjoy and lets you life where you have always wanted to; then I would encourage you to seriously consider job B.  It is not how much you earn that is important in life, enjoying life is what is important.  You will live in a smaller house and drive a less fancy car but you will find that you are a lot happier.

Religion

Religion should bring peace and happiness to the lives of those who live it.  If you are finding yourself unhappy, stressed out or depressed on a consistent basis as a result of the practicing of your religion then there is either something wrong with the way you are living your religion or something wrong with your religion itself.

One common source of stress in terms of religion is making commitments and not living up with them.  If you don’t fully intend to follow through with the commitments that you make than you are better off not making them in the first place.  When you do make a commitment make sure you uphold it.  Don’t live a double life saying every Sunday you will do such and such, and by the time Wednesday comes along you do the opposite.  Decide how you are going to live your religion and be consistent with it.

Religion is a very dangerous and powerful tool.  It changes how people perceive the world and react to it.  The two most dangerous people out there are those who practice extreme religion and those who rebel against their religion.  Both will do things that normal people would not consider doing.  The thoughts that often occur to a person breaking away from their religion are that since they have already broke one of god’s commands then it doesn’t matter any more if they break the other ones, a very dangerous slippery slope.  The religion extremist can end up rationalizing any behaviors as acceptable if it serves their religion’s divine purpose.

Practiced carefully religion and give meaning and direction to people who need guidance helping them achieve safety and harmony in their lives.
